The greenways are old railway trails that are no longer in use and have been adapted for hiking or cycling. These routes are easy, pleasant, safe, accessible and integrated into the natural environment. They have their origins in the train tracks that crossed the landscape of the counties of Girona, which over time fell into disuse and have now become paths for walking and enjoying the nature and culture of north-eastern Catalonia. These paths had not stopped growing since 2003, when the Consorci de les Vies Verdes de Girona (Girona Greenways Consortium) began to manage them.
